CLASS CONCEPTIFUNCTION

This is the single class in the Barber/Cosmetologist Series. Positions in this class provide professional barbering/cosmetology services by furnishing stylish and appropriate hair cuts, hair care and basic instruction in skin care, hygiene and grooming to facility residents and patients within the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in providing barbering/ cosmetology services to facility residents and patients. Coordinates patient scheduling; shampoos, cuts, shapes, styles by waving, straightening, and trimming hair; trims beard and ear, nose and eyebrow hair; and provides manicures and pedicures. Positions in this class attend hospital in-service classes and instruct the residents in basic grooming and hair care, proper skin care, and in shaving techniques. Observes, records and reports the residents’ hair and scalp conditions, recommends the proper hair/scalp treatments and dispenses special shampoos for use in these treatments. Observes patients’ behavior during time spent with the Barber/Cosmetologist; records the observations in the patient’s medical record and reports the observations to unit staff. May inventory/purchase supplies and implement appropriate sanitation/sterilization procedures to ensure compliance with state and hospital health/safety regulations.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Positions receive direction from a unit supervisor, manager, discipline supervisor, or director who provides periodic on-site supervision, assists in dealing with difficult patients and informs the position of changes in hospital procedure. Positions develop their own work methods and sequences within established professional Barber/Cosmetologist standards and practices and are expected to determine if the patient’s condition indicates whether the barber/cosmetology service should be provided as scheduled.

Scope: Work affects the provision of Barber/Cosmetologist services provided to residents/patients within a mental health/mental retardation facility.

Impact of Actions: Ineffective performance can result in inappropriate service being rendered to a resident/patient who is agitated or uncooperative, consequently putting this type of patient at risk of being cut or injured during delivery of the service by the Barber/Cosmetologist’s hair cutting equipment or by chemical solutions used in permanent waving or hair straightening. Decisions affect the provision of barber/cosmetology services at the facility. ·

Personal Contacts: The Barber/Cosmetologist has frequent internal contacts with patients, clinical staff, laundry/maintenance, and frequent external contacts with supply distributors and local cosmetology schools.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of principles and procedures utilized in providing barber/cosmetology services, including care and use of equipment; sanitation and sterilization techniques; and state and hospital health and safety standards.

Skills: Working skill in operating barber/cosmetology equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing; to make decisions, solve problems; and to organize and plan schedules. Demonstrated ability to shampoo, cut, shape, and style hair by waving and straightening; shave beards; trim ears, nose and eyebrow hair; and administer manicures and pedicures. Demonstrated ability to assess scalp conditions, recommend appropriate treatments for these conditions and to observe patient behavior and record these observations in the patient’s medical record.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Cosmetologists are required to be licensed by the State of Virginia Board of Cosmetology as stated in the Code of Virginia, Chapter 12, Section 54.1-1202. Exemptions: Some Barber positions may require a license issued by the State of Virginia Board of Barbers.

Education or Training: Completion of a Barber/Cosmetology training program approved by the State of Virginia Board of Barbers/Cosmetologists.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in barbering/cosmetology. Some experience in working with psychiatric or mentally disabled patients.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
