Distinguishing Features of the Work
Directs a complete buildings and grounds program at an institution with a resident population generally ranging from 3,000 to 5,000.
The duties include direction of power plant, buildings maintenance, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, and related services. Services at this level noma11y require 50 to 75 trades employees and additional semi-skilled personnel in related fields. Also included at this level are assistant director positions with responsibility for buildings maintenance, grounds, power and housekeeping at a larger state institution with a total population generally exceeding 10,000 old requiring supervision of in excess of 150 trades employees. Supervision is received from an agency administrative official or higher level director who determines overal1 policy and approves general plans of operation.

Qualification Standards
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major studies in engineering or a related field, and at least three years of supervisory experience in building maintenance, construction, or management. Additional supervisory experience of a comparable level may be substituted for the college education on an equivalent time basis, or graduate study in engineering or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of years of the required experience.
Considerable knowledge of building and grounds maintenance; considerable knowledge of building construction; good knowledge of steam and air-handling systems; ability to plan and supervise the operation of a large buildings and grounds program.
