Distinguishing Features of the Work
Supervises all phases of buildings and grounds program at an institution with a resident population generally ranging from 1500 to 3000.
The work involves supervision of all buildings and grounds services such as power plant, buildings maintenance, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, and related services. Services at this level normally require 30 to 40 tradesmen and an additional number of semi-skilled employees engaged in a variety of building maintenance and grounds keeping tasks. Also assigned to this level are assistant director positions in charge of the maintenance and related sections of a large state institution with an aggregate population normally exceeding 10,000. Supervision is received from an agency administrative official or higher level buildings and grounds official who makes general assignments and who appraises the work through inspection of results and by analysis of progress and coat reports.

Qualification Standards
Completion of high school and at least six years of supervisory experience in one or more of the building trades. Experience at the journeyman level may be substituted for education on an equivalent time basis. Completion of college with a degree in engineering or a comparable field may be substituted for the required experience on an equivalent time basis.
Considerable knowledge of the principle and methods of bui1dings maintenance and grounds maintenance; considerable knowledge of heating plant operation; ability to lay out construction projects.
