Distinguishing Features of the Work
8upervises the buildings and grounds program at an institution with a resident population of approximately 500 - 1500; or serves as assistant director with responsibility for one or more major phases of a buildings and grounds program at a larger state institution.
The duties involve supervising al1 phases of a buildings and grounds program including such functions as power plant, buildings maintenance, grounds, housekeeping and related services. The services at this level normally require 15 to 25 trades employees and a varying number of housekeeping and other semi-skilled employees. Also included at this level are assistant director positions with responsibility for one or more major phases of the buildings and grounds program at a large state installation with a population normally exceeding 5,000. Positions serving as assistant director are assigned such functions as buildings maintenance, grounds, and mechanical maintenance, or a construction section characterized by a varying number of temporary trades employees. Supervision is received from the agency head, administrative official, or higher level buildings and grounds official who makes policy decisions and appraises work results through inspection and written reports.

Qualification Standards
Completion of high school and at least four years of supervisory experience in one or more of the building trades; experience at the journeyman level may be substituted for education on an equivalent time basis or college education in engineering or technical education in a comparable field may be substituted on an equivalent time basis for up to two years of required experience.
Considerable knowledge of physical plant maintenance and methods of construction; general knowledge of the various trades; ability to work from plans for improvement or alteration of buildings and equipment; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of a varied group of skilled and semi-skilled workers.
