Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises a limited buildings and grounds program in a state institution or agency.

This is a worker-supervisor combination of duties involving the supervision of buildings and grounds services where no higher level technical supervision is available. The services include heating, air-conditioning, housekeeping, grounds, and related services. The size of the program is reflected by the limited physical plant and the fact that major maintenance and construction work is normally performed by outside forces. Also included at this level are assistant positions which function in a foreman capacity over a group of permanently assigned journeyman level workers involving a variety of skills.

Supervision is received from an administrative official or higher level buildings and grounds supervisor who makes assignments and reviews work during performance and upon completion.

Examples of duties characteristic of positions in this class:

  1. Supervises and assigns work to carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and related tradesmen performing general repair work.
  2. Personally performs minor repair to heating, air-conditioning, and electric equipment; maintains limited grounds.
  3. Determines need for sub-contracting work necessitated by mayor equipment repair.
  4. Makes inspections of buildings and grounds to determine repairs and maintenance needed.
  5. Receives emergency calls and assigns tradesmen to make repairs.
  6. Estimates materials end labor needed; requisitions materials for minor maintenance work.
  7. Assists higher level buildings and grounds supervisors in receiving requests and coordinating an established work order system in a large state agency.
