CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the series for positions which repair and service a variety of office machines such as typewriters, calculators, audio-visual equipment, personal computers, electronic printers, duplicating equipment, microscopes and time clocks. Positions in this class serve as lead workers in the operation of a shop to maintain and repair office machines and equipment. This class is distinguished from the Office Machine Repairer class by the additional responsibility to lead others.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions organize work orders and make assignments to Office Machine Repairers; document work hours; inspect work; and maintain records of parts and expenses incurred on service calls. Writes orders for parts and maintains inventory records. Positions develop preventive maintenance schedules; and recommend disposition of equipment based on age, condition and cost of continued maintenance. Performs repair work as required. Reviews and approves daily time sheets and keeps records of approved leave for Office Machine Repairers. May be required to train lower level repair personnel, and oversee contract repair work.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor; however, positions provide leadership and technical guidance to Office Machine Repairers.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a trades supervisor.

Scope: Work activities affect the operation of office equipment and machinery throughout the agency.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the efficient operation of office equipment and machinery; and positively impacts the image and budget of the assigned organizational unit.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts and infrequent external contacts with agency personnel to provide services and with vendors to order parts.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the operation and repair of a variety of office equipment and machinery; of basic electronics; and of office policies and procedures.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of hand tools, power tools and welding equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and technical guidance to others; to repair office equipment; to maintain repair and personnel records; and to interpret diagrams and manufacturers' instructions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in a trade or technical school.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in the maintenance and repair of office machines and equipment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class was revised as a result of the statewide Classification Review/Specifi-cation Update Program. It replaces the Typewriter Service Leadman class, effective May 1, 1992.
