CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second and supervisory level class in the Electronic Equipment Installation and Repair series. Positions in this class supervise the installation, removal, and repair of automotive mobile and fixed communication equipment, ensuring a proper inventory system is in place and that a maintenance schedule is developed and implemented. This class is distinguished from the Electronic Equipment Installation and Repair Technician class which installs, removes, cleans, and repairs automotive electronic equipment.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Supervises and inspects the installation and repair of mobile and fixed communication equipment. Supervises Electronic Equipment Installation and Repair Technicians who install, repair, refurbish, and remove electronic equipment in vehicles/motorcycles. Positions are responsible for determining what supplies are needed and making purchases. Maintains maintenance and inventory records. Determines specifications; designs electronic equipment mounts for a variety of vehicles; drafts final plans and schematics; troubleshoots technical problems and conducts equipment tests through personal computer; and prioritizes job orders. Performs or assists the Electronic Equipment Installation and Repair Technicians with the more complex technical problems and serves as a resource to management and other agencies.

Supervision Given: This class provides general supervision to Electronic Equipment Installation and Repair Technicians.

Supervision Received: Receives supervision from an agency administrator.

Scope: Supervises the installation, removal, and repair of mobile and fixed electronic equipment for vehicles assigned to an agency and for various other agencies as requested.

Impact of Actions: Work affects the operation of the communication system and a portion of the maintenance budget.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with state and federal agency personnel to schedule appointments for installation and repair service; and various contacts with vendors to order and pick up supplies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electronic communications systems; of agency procurement policy; sheet metal design and fabrication, use of personal computers commensurate with job duties, and of basic electronic diagnostic testing for electronic equipment and related peripherals.

Skills: Skilled in the use of hand and power tools, various electronic testing equipment, and operation of personal computers.

Abilities: Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical or electronic/electrical malfunctions; to supervise the work of others; and to prepare written records of activities. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to read and understand diagrams and schematics.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Virginia vehicle operator's license.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school with additional training in electronic, electrical, or mechanical trade.

Level and Type of Experience: Considerable experience in the installation and repair of electronic communications equipment and usage of personal computers.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
