Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as the operating head of a large full-service unit providing printing/photocopying services for an extensive volume and range of agency user needs.

Supervisory responsibilities typically involve personnel engaged in phototypesetting and lithography, offset and letterpress printing and finishing, and photocopying specialties. Reports to a printing administrator or agency senior executive.

Positions allocated to this class coordinate the operations of large printing shops consisting of 20 or more full-time equivalent employees supervised through sub-section heads, or serve as the principal agency printing professional in full service units consisting of more than 10 full-time equivalent employees encompassing the above noted specialties.

Shop Management

Supervises and coordinates various aspects of shop operations including phototypesetting and lithography, press operations, binding and finishing, and photocopying services. Has primary responsibility for staffing and unit operational readiness. Ensures adequate inventory of supplies. Receives and schedules incoming work. Assigns personnel and equipment to handle varying workloads. Monitors job progress to meet scheduled delivery dates. Trains and evaluates supporting staff. Develops shop procedures. Is responsible for equipment maintenance, and advises on new equipment acquisitions.

Principal Agency Professional

Develops and manages the agency budget for printing/copying services. Develops pricing and operating policies. Determines and selects equipment needed, and supervises equipment maintenance. Confers with agency administrators, department heads and other users on printing needs. Prepares job specifications. Selects, trains and supervises supporting staff. Assigns and monitors work, providing assistance as required. Ascertains job quality. Oversees maintenance of production and fiscal performance records. Is responsible for the overall adequacy and efficiency of agency printing operations.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of lithographic printing and xerographic copying principles, techniques and equipment. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to plan and supervise large-scale, diverse printing operations, including budgetary planning and administration. Ability to confer with users regarding printing needs, and to develop job specifications. Ability to negotiate for equipment and services. Ability to train and supervise a large supporting staff.

Graduation from high school or trade school with coursework related to the position’s duties, and related work experience that included supervision in a full-service printing environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
