Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as the operating head of a medium size unit providing printing/photocopying services to agency users.

Personnel supervised may include Printing Press Operators, Photocopy Technicians, and other supporting staff. May report to a higher level technician, or other supervisor or administrator.

Positions allocated to this class serve as working heads of units providing a considerable volume and variety of printing, copying and finishing services through the use of offset printing and/or xerographic and micrographic copying techniques. Supporting staff typically consists of 5-10 full-time equivalent employees. The duties of positions at this level reflect increased emphasis on administrative/supervisory responsibilities, with less time being devoted to equipment operation.

Develops unit objectives, procedures and operating budget. Confers with users on special job requirements. Schedules and assigns work, and sets quality standards. Coordinates job production phases. Trains, supervises and evaluates supporting staff. Provides assistance as required for unusually difficult work.

Operates lithographic, printing, copying and finishing equipment as needed. Works with vendors on equipment selection and maintenance. Performs routine in-house service. Provides for adequate inventories of supplies. Prepares operating reports, and oversees billing and collections.

Some positions may specialize in the management of multiple agency wide, manned copy centers, and coin-operated copy machine networks. Management duties include negotiating with vendors for equipment selection and rental, training key operator personnel, budget preparation and fiscal operating management.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of lithographic printing and xerographic copying principles, techniques and equipment. Skill in equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to plan unit objectives and procedures. Ability to negotiate for equipment and services. Ability to train and supervise supporting staff. Ability to maintain operating and fiscal records.

Graduation from high school or technical school with coursework related to the position's duties, and related work experience that included supervision; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
