Distinguishing Features of the Work

Serves as the operating head of a small unit providing printing/photocopying services to agency users.

Personnel supervised may include Printing Press Operators, Photocopy Technicians, and other supporting staff. May report to a higher level technician, or other supervisor/administrator.

Positions allocated to this class serve as working heads of units providing a variety of printing/copying/finishing services through the use of offset printing and/or xerographic copying techniques. The supporting staff typically consists of under five full-time equivalent employees.

Receives requests for jobs, conferring with users as necessary to determine job specifications. Schedules and assigns work to staff depending on type of work and priorities involved. Oversees job progress and quality of finished products, including binding and finishing.

Operates process camera to produce lithographic negatives. Develops film and performs stripping, retouching and plate making tasks. Runs offset press and binding/finishing equipment to produce completed job products.

Establishes unit operating procedures. Trains, supervises and evaluates supporting staff. Supervises and performs equipment maintenance. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. Keeps production and cost records, and prepares unit budget. Recommends pricing levels for various types of work produced.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of lithographic printing and xerographic copying principles, techniques and equipment. Skill in equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to train and supervise a supporting staff. Ability to develop operating procedures and to maintain production and cost records.

Graduation from high school or technical school with coursework related to printing operations and related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
