Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs beginning-level work in operating small offset or letterpress printing presses; or performs a variety of finishing duties in cutting, punching, collating, folding, binding, padding and packaging printing products.

Typically reports to a higher level technician or similar supervisor.

Positions allocated to this class may perform a combination of printing and bindery work depending on operating needs and work volume.

Printing

Assists in operating smaller offset or letter presses, usually under 23 inches. Reads work orders to determine job nature, size and materials to be used. Prepares press by preparing ink and water solutions, and adjusting flow to printing plates. Loads paper, and adjusts feeding and jogging mechanisms. Attaches printing plates. Assists with and monitors job runs. Performs related duties as assigned.

Finishing

Operates a variety of finishing equipment including sophisticated, programmable paper cutters, folders and collators designed for high volume projects. Adjusts equipment for size and weight of paper, or other project requirements. Operates punching, stapling and binding equipment. Does padding. Operates shrink wrapping machine. Performs equipment maintenance. Keeps records on work. Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Qualification Guide

Ability to operate various types of equipment safely and to perform required adjustments and maintenance. Ability to perform manual labor involving high volume repetitive tasks. Ability to follow oral and written directions. Ability to keep records of work.

A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding abilities.
