Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and participates in the work of a printing shop bindery and finishing section.

Staff supervised typically consists of Printing/Bindery Workers. Reports to a shop manager or other supervisor.

Receives jobs and determines best methods of handling. Assigns personne1 and equipment for efficient use of resources. Monitors jobs in progress, and advises shop manager of any difficulties.

Trains staff in use and safety of such equipment as programmable cutters, folders and collators designed for high volume work; punchers, staplers and stitchers; shrink wrapping machines; and padding materials. May assemble equipment components and make adjustments for special jobs. Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment. Participates in new equipment selection. Receives materials and supplies from vendors, and updates inventory records. Operates forklift truck.

Keeps cost and other records on work performed. Assists shop manager in estimating finishing costs. Supervises or handles delivery or mailing of completed work. Participates in evaluating performance of subordinate staff.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the characteristics, uses and maintenance of various types of bindery and finishing equipment. Ability to perform manual labor involving high-volume repetitive tasks. Ability to schedule personnel and equipment for efficient use. Ability to train and supervise subordinates. Ability to estimate costs and maintain records.

A combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities.
