Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates a process camera to make negatives, halftones and duotones of typeset material and artwork for use in offset (lithographic) printing.

May provide direction to personnel performing stripping and paste-up work. Typically reports to a higher level technician or a print shop manager

The work typically involves the use of cameras, meters and other accessories for producing line and halftone negatives, enlargements and photomurals. Mounts copy on copy board, positions board for camera distance, sets camera tense and exposes film. Develops film by tray or automatic processor. Strips negatives to flats in correct registration for single color and multi-color work.

Makes minor changes to negatives as required for reruns. Makes duplicate negatives, positives, and shrink and swell negatives. Prepares composite proofs for pre-press approval. May make up layouts for pagination of multi-page projects, and prepare cost estimates for camera and related work. May make plates for use in printing operation. Maintains inventory of supplies and materials used.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of lithographic printing. Skill in the use of photolithographic equipment and accessories. Ability to perform exacting registration tasks for color and other complex work. Ability to maintain equipment in good working order. Ability to make job estimates.

Graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in photography or photolithography, and demonstrated experience related to photolithographic work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
