Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and participates in the work of a printing shop phototypesetting unit.

Personnel supervised primarily consists of Phototypesetting Specialists, but may include other staff. Typically reports to a shop manager or other printing administrator.

Plans and assigns work to be performed. Monitors work in progress and assures quality and acceptability of finished products. Confers with customers regarding unusual or complicated work and makes recommendations for achieving best results.

Trains subordinates in the use and care of equipment, and in changes in techniques and procedures. May also supervise layout and paste-up, and artwork functions. Works closely with photography and printing units to ensure acceptability of final product. Operates typesetting and processing equipment as required by workload or project complexity.

Maintains adequate supplies of materials used by unit. Performs routine equipment maintenance. Studies new developments in typesetting and layout technology, and typesetting interfacing with word processing functions.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of typesetting and layout makeup for offset printing. Knowledge of printing methodology. Ability to perform skilled phototypesetting tasks. Ability to train and direct the work of subordinates. Ability to confer with customers on unusual or difficult projects. Ability to keep abreast of rapid technological change.

Graduation from high school with additional training in phototypesetting preferred, and considerable experience related to the position’s duties, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
