Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates a magnetic typesetter and related equipment to produce camera ready galley proofs for use in printing.

May report to a printing or publications professional or other supervisor.

Utilizes a typewriter keyboard and video display terminal to record typestyle and other specifics, and to enter and format text material. Transfers information entered to typesetter and codes typesetter for film production. Processes film to produce camera-ready galley proofs. Corrects proofs for input errors, or as required by originators or artists.

Maintains magnetic media files for retrieval and re-use. Keeps production records. Performs routine equipment service and minor maintenance. Orders and maintains supplies.

Works with originators and artists to solve copy fitting and typographical problems. May assist artists with paste-ups and other tasks. May train new or less experienced typesetters.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of typography and graphics design. Skill in typing and proofreading. Ability to solve copy fitting problems. Ability to perform routine equipment service and maintenance. Ability to work with originators, artists and publications personnel.

Graduation from high school and work experience related to the duties of the position. Relevant training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skill and abilities may substitute for high school graduation.
