Distinguishing Features of the Work

Makes ready and operates large sheet-fed offset printing presses up to and including 40" two color perfecter, with the primary emphasis on multicolor output.

May supervise or assist in training lower level operators. Directions are received from a foreman, shop manager or similar supervisor.

The work is distinguished from that of Printing Press Operator B by responsibility for the operation and maintenance of various large sheet-feed printing presses in the production of high quality process color, and large solids with small type reversed. The set-up, operation, and maintenance of these presses require complex mechanical manipulations not usually associated with regular journeyman work.

Positions allocated to the class perform advanced technical work such as determining setup and operative procedure from work orders; checking and mounting plates prior to running press for multicolor processing; measuring, combining and maintaining proper ink/water balance for tonal or color consistency; adjusting inking rollers to obtain even distribution of ink; checking inking dots as required; mixing pressroom chemicals for proper use; preparing plates for reruns; maintaining precise registry in back-ups and multicolor production; maintaining, changing and/or packing rollers and blankets; regulating ink flow by adjusting fountains; and cleaning and preserving offset plates when appropriate.

Exercises safety precautions regarding machines, equipment, cleaning solvents and chemicals. Performs minor and preventative maintenance.

 

Qualification Guide

Considerable knowledge of lithographic reproduction with the primary emphasis on multicolor output. Demonstrated ability to solve printing press problems. Demonstrated ability to perform routine equipment service and maintenance. Ability to work with job originators.

Graduation from high school, and experience commensurate with the position’s duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities.
