Distinguishing Features of the Work

Operates small and medium size offset or letter presses to produce printed copy, folders, brochures, theses, books, decals and other types of printed materials having varied technical requirements.

May provide direction to trainees or lower level operators. Typically reports to a foreman, shop manager or similar supervisor.

Determines nature of job and materials to be used from written or verbal job orders. Prepares presses by preparing ink and water solutions, and adjusting flow to printing plates. Loads paper and adjusts feeding and jogging mechanisms. Attaches printing plates and adjusts pressure.

Starts press, and runs proof sheets to verify margins, ink coverage and image quality. Makes adjustments as required, and runs job, monitoring press performance. Keeps records of work done.

Operates a cylinder letterpress and related coating and drying equipment to produce automobile license and other special types of decals. Performs related packaging, record keeping and product security tasks.

Cleans ink rollers and fountain. Cleans, oils and adjusts press machinery. May perform cutting, binding and finishing operations. May burn and prepare printing plates, or perform other related printing shop duties.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of offset lithographic printing principles, techniques, and equipment. Skill in operating small and medium size offset and/or letter presses to produce a variety of printed materials. Ability to perform manual labor involving high-volume repetitive tasks. Ability to perform other printing shop functions such as platemaking and finishing operations.

Graduation from high school or trade school with coursework related to printing operations; or a combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities.
