Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises and participates in the work of an offset or letterpress printing unit producing a variety of printed materials; or supervises and participates in the work of photolithographic as well as offset printing functions in a large printing shop.

Provides direction to a staff that includes several Printing Press Operators, and that may also include pnotolithographic personnel. Typically reports to a shop manager or other printing administrator.

Receives and reviews incoming work to determine requirements in terms of personnel, equipment and supplies. Makes work assignments, providing instruction/direction as needed.

Oversees press preparation as required including type of stock, inks and press adjustments. Oversees photolithographic preparation including camera work, stripping and platemaking. Examines proof sheets from press run for margins, ink coverage, image quality and register. Oversees necessary press adjustments. Monitors work completion.

Other duties may include platemaking, press operation, finishing work, maintaining inventory of supplies, performing maintenance and repairs on equipment, training and evaluating work of staff, and conferring with shop manager on production requirements and overall shop operations.

 

Qualification Guide

Considerable knowledge of lithographic printing principles, techniques and equipment. Skill in equipment operation and maintenance. Ability to estimate and plan a variety of printing work, and to train and supervise the work of a skilled trades staff.

Graduation from high school or trade school with coursework in lithographic printing, and experience at the advanced journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
