CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class and supervisory level in the Elevator Maintenance series. Positions in this class provide supervision to Elevator Maintenance Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of elevators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair lifts or other hydraulic or electric lift devices. This class is distinguished from the Elevator Maintenance Mechanic class by its responsibility to supervise others.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the supervision of a maintenance program for elevators and other hydraulic or electric lift equipment. Positions provide general supervision to Elevator Maintenance Mechanics and contract service personnel in the performance of preventive maintenance and general repair work. Some time is devoted to working in the capacity of a mechanic, particularly during the more complex service calls. Positions purchase replacement parts and supplies; establish maintenance schedules; conduct safety tests; and maintain all records related to service calls, maintenance schedules, parts inventory, and service contracts.

Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Elevator Maintenance Mechanics.

Supervision Received: Receives directions from a Buildings and Grounds Superintendent.

Scope: Work activities affect the operation of elevators and other hydraulic or electric lifting equipment on an agency-wide basis.

Impact of Actions: Effective decisions and actions positively impact the operation of elevators and related equipment, the safety of passengers and operators, and the management of the departmental maintenance budget. Errors could result in the inefficient use of time, money, and other resources.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with agency personnel to coordinate service calls; and with vendors or contract inspectors to purchase materials or assist with inspections.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of elevator safety codes; of the operation and maintenance requirements of elevators and other hydraulic or electric lift devices; and of agency purchasing regulations.

Skills: Working skill in the mechanical and electrical repair of elevators and related equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex mechanical or electrical problems and repair elevators and other hydraulic or electric lift devices; to supervise others; and to maintain a recordkeeping system.
