CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Elevator Maintenance series. Positions in this class perform preventive maintenance, repairs and adjustments, and install replacement parts to all elevators, dumbwaiters and wheelchair lifts. In some locations, positions also may administer the elevator maintenance contract. This class is distinguished from the Elevator Operator class which operates but does not perform maintenance or repair work on elevators. It is distinguished from the Elevator Maintenance Supervisor class by the latter's requirement to provide formal supervision to Elevator Maintenance Mechanics.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty. Positions in this class diagnose mechanical problems, perform necessary repairs, and implement the preventive maintenance schedule. Positions make wiring changes of power and control work voltages, and install replacement parts to correct problems with elevators, dumbwaiters, booklifts and wheelchair lifts. Assists elevator inspectors during inspections and safety tests. Administers elevator maintenance contracts by placing service calls, assisting with repair work and conducting follow-up inspections. Responds to emergency calls which may require removing passengers from disabled elevators.

Supervision Given: Supervision typically is not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from an Elevator Maintenance Supervisor or other trades supervisor.

Scope: Work affects the operating condition of elevators, dumbwaiters, booklifts and wheelchair lifts on an agency-wide basis or for a specific location within an agency, which in turn affects the safety of users.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the safe and efficient operating condition of elevators and related equipment, and ensures the safety of passengers or persons using the equipment. Errors could result in the costly need for additional repairs or could negatively impact the safety and well being of passengers.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with vendors and agency business managers to obtain repair tools and parts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of elevator safety codes; of elevator operation and accessories; and of elevators and other hydraulic or electric lift devices.

Skills: Working skill in the mechanical and electrical repair of elevators and related equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair mechanical or electrical malfunctions; and to read blueprints and schematic drawings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional training in hydraulic or electrical motor maintenance or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Some experience repairing, adjusting and installing replacement parts to elevators.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
