CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is a single class for positions that operate a cable driven ferry to transport motor vehicles and passengers across designated waterways.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the operation and maintenance of a cable driven ferry. Operates ferry controls; loads, blocks, and unloads vehicles; handles mooring lines and hawsers when docking or undocking ferries; performs preventive maintenance such as greasing, oiling, and other routine maintenance; maintains and cleans deck, surrounding grounds area and the entrance/ exit ramps; works to assure the safety of passengers and responds to emergency situations; assists district and residency bridge crews in replacement of cable, pulleys and/or hinges; logs crossings and weather conditions daily; answers questions and/or provides directions to the traveling public; performs ordinary labor and maintenance duties when ferry is not operational such as snow removal, cleaning grounds, maintaining roads and right of way and preventive equipment maintenance.

Supervision Given: None.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Transportation Maintenance Superintendent.

Scope: Operates a cable driven ferry that transport the public on a designated waterway.

Impact of Actions: Work has moderate impact to mechanical operations of ferry and significant impact to automobiles' undercarriage when connecting from land to ferry. Agency's image could be adversely affected if services are not provided in a congenial manner. In the event of an emergency, incumbents have a substantial impact on the safety of passengers and motor vehicles.

Personal Contacts: Positions have frequent and routine contact with the traveling public which includes answering questions and providing directions or information.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the ferry's operations; assigned waterways and U.S. Coast Guard regulations; traffic control for boarding vehicles or oncoming boats; emergency procedures related fire-fighting and man overboard; and of information on the local area.

Skills: Working skill in the use of hand held power tools and equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform heavy manual labor and respond to emergency situations; to read and interpret regulations; to maintain records and to perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs; and to work in inclement weather.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class, previously titled Motor Boat Ferry Operator A, was redefined and retitled by the Virginia Department of Transportation, effective August 1992.
