CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Toll Facilities Management series. Positions in this class supervise a group of Toll Collectors at a designated toll facility. This class is distinguished from the Toll Collections Superintendent class by that class's responsibility for supervision of multiple shifts of Toll Collections Supervisors.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty involving the supervision of daily toll collections operations of a group of Toll Collectors at a designated toll facility. Work involves supervising and monitoring the work performed by the Toll Collectors; addressing scheduling changes and time keeping; and ensuring the adherence to established rules and regulations. Issues, replenishes, receives, and maintains monetary working funds for Toll Collectors; removes and replaces vaults; prepares reports and maintains documentation reflecting the staff's activities. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing and recommending applicants for employment; training new employees; evaluating the work of Toll Collectors. Oversees traffic movement and initiates emergency calls to state and/or local police, and fire and rescue squads; performs minor repairs of malfunctioning equipment; contacts equipment repairmen for major malfunctions/repairs; removes foreign objects and manned coins from machines; and provides assistance to the general public.

Supervision Given: Provides immediate supervision to groups of Toll Collectors performing routine toll collection functions in a toll facility.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Toll Collections Superintendent.

Scope: Work involves the supervision of a group of Toll Collectors on a single shift at an assigned toll facility.

Impact of Actions: Effective job performance ensures the efficient operation of toll collections functions for assigned staff at a designated toll facility. Ineffective actions may result in traffic problems or inefficient collection of tolls, and may negatively affect the safety and well-being of the traveling public.

Personal Contacts: Frequent external contact on routine matters with persons such as individuals from banks, armored car services, police departments, or fire or rescue squads during various emergencies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; of toll collections rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; of basic arithmetic; and of automatic toll equipment adequate to make minor repairs.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to train, supervise, and advise others in their work; to assign and schedule work; to process information into reports; to verify receipts for accuracy; and to deal tactfully with the traveling public.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

License or Certification: Valid Virginia driver's license.

Education or Training: High school graduation or equivalent.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in toll collection, minor repair work and some supervisory experience.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
