CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the trainee class in the Bridge and Structure Inspection series. Positions in this class are provided on-the-job and classroom training in the regularly scheduled visual and mechanical inspections of bridges and structures that are located within a specific geographic area in accordance with prescribed procedures.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs progressively responsible work receiving training in visual and mechanical inspections of concrete, timber and steel bridges and structures, their components, and surrounding area to determine existing conditions, degree of deterioration, delamination, scour damage, corrosion, lateral shifting, and loading/clearance postings. Positions in this class receive well-defined instructions, classroom and on-the-job training, and are required to closely follow the "Bridge Inspector's Training Manual." Incumbents perform progressively responsible assignments which enable the incumbent to gain knowledge, skills and abilities in understanding bridge and structure inspection methods, plan reading, inspection reports preparation, sketches of conditions, computing estimated cost of materials for repair and rehabilitation, updating computerized records, and maintaining equipment and supplies. There is considerable danger in this work since positions in this class work out of doors, in all types of weather, work at great heights, in confined spaces, over water, and in close proximity to traffic.
Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.
Supervision Received: Immediate supervision is received from a Bridge Structure Inspection Team Leader, or higher level technical or engineering position who gives well-defined instructions. The employee performs all assignments in the presence of a higher level inspector.
Scope: Positions in this class receive training in performing in-depth inspections of bridges and structures within a specific geographic area.
Impact of Actions: This class has a minor impact of actions since the positions receives immediate supervision. Errors or omissions in the performance of the duties may result in some inconvenience for the team leader.
Personal Contacts: Infrequent external contact with property owners and the traveling public to provide information regarding work activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Some knowledge of drafting techniques; and algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
Skills: None identified for this class.
Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform the work in accordance with established training guidelines and practices; and to work out of doors, in all types of weather, at great heights, in confined spaces, over water, and in close proximity to traffic.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certification: Valid motor vehicle operator's license at hire.
Education or Training: Graduation from High School with course work in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and drafting.
Level and Type of Experience: None.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class, previously titled Bridge Safety Inspector Trainee, was revised as a result of a Classification Review/Specification Update study conducted by the Department of Transportation, effective March 1992.
