PHOTOGRAMMETRIST SPECIALIST 54246

8/1/88 C

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the third class in the Photogrammetrist Series. Positions in this class perform the full range of stereo-plotting activities including digitizing features, plotting contours, and generating ground profiles and cross sections; and concentrate on the process of Analytical Aerial Triangulation. This class is distinguished from the Photogrammetrist Senior by its substantial focus and concentration on the Analytical Aerial Triangulation process. This class is distinguished from the Photogrammetrist Supervisor class by that class’s responsibility to supervise a multi-leveled staff of photogrammetrists.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty involving the most advanced tasks of photogrammetry in the preparation of planimetric, topographic, hydrographic, and cadastral maps. Performs analytical aerial triangulation to provide horizontal and vertical controls used by photogrammetrists in the compilation of stereomodels. Analyzes data to determine what level of control is acceptable and makes necessary adjustments. Provides instrument settings to lower level photogrammetrists for their respective equipment. Selects locations for control and pass points; annotates photography with these point locations; and operates pugging device. Reviews input and analyzes output of analytical triangulation program. Maintains a library of computer software used in the Analytical Aerial Triangulation program, maintains and modifies these programs; and trains and advises lower level photogrammetrists in the use of analytical stereoplotters and the analytical triangulation process. In addition, positions in this class compile digitized planimetric maps ,or Computer Assisted Drafting and Design (CADD) systems or printed plotting; secures cross section data, digital terrain data and centerline profiles; collects contour data for digital terrain models; and edits and corrects data to comply with Department specifications.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, positions in this class provide training, advice, and guidance particularly in the area of Analytical Aerial Triangulation to Photogrammetrist Seniors, Photogrammetrists, and Photogrammetrist Assistants.

Supervision Received: Receives direction from a Photogrammetrist Supervisor.

Scope: Positions in this class specialize in the process of Analytical Aerial Triangulation in addition to performing all other activities in the operation of stereoscopic plotting instruments. Work affects the accuracy and reliability of the work of lower level photogrammetrists as well as facilitates all highway engineering projects requiring aerial survey data.

Impact of Actions: Actions impact the technical accuracy and timeliness of the work of other photogrammetrists, and of highway engineering projects. Effective decision making ensures accurate maps that enable successful completion of projects. Ineffective decisions can be costly in terms of time, money and resources.

Personal Contacts: Positions have infrequent contacts with agency information systems staff and equipment vendors to exchange information on software use, problems, and methods of operation; and with design engineers concerning projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of photnarammetric practices and principles as related to planimetric, topographic, hydrographic, and cadastral maps, and particularly Analytical Aerial Triangulation; and of the technical application of drafting methods and procedures including applicable mathematical calculations and theories. Working knowledge of CADD practices and principles and of survey requirements related to highway design plans. Some knowledge of basic engineering practices and principles.

Skills: Considerable skill in the operation of optical train stereoscopic plotting instruments.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to use depth perception; to interpret photographic images and patterns; to transfer information into a digital format for topographic, planimetric, cadastral, and hydrographic mapping; to perform the process of Analytical Aerial Triangulation; and to train others in general photogrammetry and the Aerial Analytical Triangulation process.

QUALIFICATION GUIDE*

Licenses and Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent with additional course work in mathematics, drafting, surveying, computer technology, or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience in the operation of stereoscopic plotting instruments with some background in Analytical Aerial Triangulation.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
