CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the third and supervisory level in the series of classes involved in creating, tracing and revising maps. Positions in this class are responsible for supervising Cartographic Drafter Assistants and Cartographic Drafters and for focusing on the management of agency wide cartographic functions. This class is distinguished from the Cartographic Drafter class by the responsibility for supervision and oversight of the cartographic program.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty which requires knowledge of the utilization of basic drafting skills in providing supervision to Cartographic Drafter Assistants and Cartographic Drafters. Duties typically include developing graphic materials such as display maps with overlays, overhead projection films, logos, and blueprints. Positions in this class also schedule work; set priorities for the work unit; coordinate requests from other divisions of the agency and other state agencies for mapping services; instruct in cartographic procedures and techniques; order supplies for the work unit and provide technical advice and guidance to cartographic staff.
Supervision Given: Provides general supervision to Cartographic Drafter Assistants and Cartographic Drafters involved in making maps to be used for showing property boundaries and constructed features of the land.
Supervision Received: Receives directions from a higher level administrative manager.
Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for the review and oversight of work that affects the property values of citizens and the construction of highways, which have significant monetary values.
Impact of Actions: Inaccuracy of final work products could result in lost time money and cause problems with the reliability of maps and with public relations.
Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with various state agencies/councils concerning projects in progress; with local government representatives and commissioners of revenue to ascertain data and information needed for the creation of maps; with vendors for the purpose of securing product information; and with private citizens regarding property ownership and property lines.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of cartographic techniques; knowledge of basic mathematics; knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Working knowledge of standard drafting equipment and its use.
Skills: None identified for this class.
Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interpret aerial photographs, road plans and maps, and geological survey quadrangle maps; to communicate verbally and in writing; and to supervise the work of others.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certifications: A valid Virginia driver’s license.
Education and Training: High school graduation or equivalent, with coursework in drafting or map making.
Level and Type of Experience: Previous experience in progressively responsible cartographic positions and leading the work of others.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
CLASS HISTORY
This class was re-titled and redefined in May 1988 as a result of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class replaces the Cartographic Draftsman Supervisor class.
