CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in the Cartographic Drafter Series of classes involved in creating, tracing and revising maps. Positions in this class are responsible for drawing, tracing and revising maps and researching data for inclusion on maps. This class is distinguished from the Cartographic Drafter Assistant class by its responsibility for more complex work assignments including creating new maps, performing research, and on occasion acting as a lead worker. The work of this class is distinguished from that of the Cartographic Supervisor class by the absence of direct supervisory responsibility.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of the Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires the utilization of drafting skills to draw, trace, revise and modify maps. Duties typically consist of correcting or drawing new maps from data obtained from plats, deeds and other sources; researching data and analyzing survey data, source maps, photographs and other records to determine location and names of features for the revision of maps. Duties may also include instructing and providing leadership to Cartographic Drafter Assistants in procedures and techniques used in cartography. Studies legal records to establish boundaries of properties.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the general supervision of a Cartographic Supervisor.

Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for performing cartographic duties which produce maps that can be used for specific purposes such as determining real property boundaries or highway construction and routes. Work affects the accuracy of maps.

Impact of Actions: Accurate cartographic work will enhance services and goodwill of the department, and will result in accurate representation of boundaries of properties, use of constructed highways, and environmental geographic information used in publications.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact, both verbal and written is necessary with government representatives and local officials for the purpose of obtaining data required for the creation of maps and to ascertain information regarding highway plans. Frequent contact with private citizens to clarify property ownership and property lines.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of drafting principles and techniques; working knowledge of basic mathematical principles and research methods.

Skills: Considerable skill in the use of standard drafting equipment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interpret aerial photographs, road plans and geological survey quadrangle maps in order to create maps; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: A valid Virginia driver's license.

Education and Training: High school graduation or equivalent, with course work in drafting or map making.

Level and Type of Experience: Previous experience in cartography.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was re-titled and redefined in July, 1988, as a result of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class replaces the Cartographic Draftsman B class.
