CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the first class in the Cartographic Drafter Series of classes involved in creating, drafting, tracing and revising maps. Positions in this class draw and trace maps of geographical areas to show natural property boundaries and constructed features of land. This class is distinguished from the Cartographic Drafter class by the responsibility of revising, tracing, and updating already existing maps which require less research.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty which requires the utilization of basic drafting skills to draw, trace, revise and modify maps. Duties typically consist of drawing and/or tracing maps from data obtained from plats, deeds and other sources; and researching data for map revision. Traces information from synthesized map bases onto reproducible media by the use of technical drafting pens, triangles, straight edges, touch curves and special templates. Makes final revision on original maps to comply with research findings.
Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.
Supervision Received: Performs work under the general supervision of a Cartographic Supervisor.
Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for performing basic cartographic duties necessary to update maps which will be used by localities for assessment of real property, transportation needs, or transportation routes.
Impact of Action: Accurate cartographic work will enhance services and goodwill of the department and impact upon boundaries of properties, use of constructed highways, and environmental geographic information used in publications.
Personal Contact: Frequent contacts outside the agency with private citizens to clarify property ownership and property lines for revision of maps.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Some knowledge of basic drafting principles and techniques, of mathematical principles and of research methods.
Skills: Working skill in the use of standard drafting equipment.
Abilities: Demonstrated ability to interpret aerial photographs, road plans and geological survey maps in order to draw maps; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certification: A valid Virginia driver's license.
Education and Training: High school graduation or equivalent, with course work in drafting.
Level and Type of Experience: None required for entrance into this class.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for education and experience.
CLASS HISTORY
This class was re-titled and redefined in July 1988, as a result of the Statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. This class replaces the Cartographic Draftsman A class.
