CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the trainee class in the Transportation Construction Inspector series for positions in training to monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance on roadway, tunnel, structure, and bridge construction projects. Positions in this class perform increasingly responsible construction inspection duties in a training capacity, receiving close technical supervision from Transportation Construction Inspectors and Transportation Construction Inspectors Seniors to learn agency inspection methods and techniques.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs work of routine difficulty in a training capacity. Inspects excavations, drainage facilities, safety, environmental, and traffic control devices, and road surfaces and structures by comparing work performed to plans and specifications. Maintains project records including daily diaries, workbook, and materials records. Receives on-the-job and required agency classroom training to obtain designated highway material certifications.
Supervision Given: None.
Supervision Received: Receives immediate supervision from a Project Engineer or Assistant Resident Engineer. Receives close technical supervision from Construction Inspectors, Construction Inspector Seniors, and Project Engineers.
Scope: Inspects assigned portions or phases of a highway construction project within a transportation district or residency.
Impact of Actions: Performance of assigned inspection tasks affects the safety of agency employees, contractors, and the traveling public and the quality of construction to a limited extent since work is closely supervised.
Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with agency personnel in residencies or districts to receive technical guidance. Frequent external contacts with contractors' personnel to discuss construction-related activities. Infrequent external contact with landowners and the general public.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Working knowledge of basic mathematics including computation of linear and cubic measurements.
Skills: None identified for this class.
Abilities: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and learn and apply new information and concepts.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
License or Certification: Valid motor vehicle operator's license at hire.
Education or Training: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Level and Type of Experience: None.
Other Considerations: Working in the vicinity of devices emitting low level ionizing radiation may be required.
