CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the fifth level in the Engineering Technician series. Positions in this class perform work tasks within such specialty areas as utilities or bridge. Tasks range in complexity from moderate to considerable difficulty and either require performing technical work to support the relocation of various types of utilities; or designing and drafting simple spans, structures or components.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: This level is distinguished from the Engineering Technician IV by its responsibilities for the beginning level design of structures and bridges; or by performing utility location and relocations. It is distinguished from the Engineering Technician VI by the latters full range of supervisory responsibilities to include planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of technicians and support staff; or by working with consultant designers to include overseeing consultant contractual performance; or by completing project design on simple projects or complex portions of larger projects; or by performing a broader range of transportation planning duties to include forecasting and developing strategies; or by planning, implementing and overseeing safety control measures at construction work sites; or by evaluating and interpreting materials testing results in a specialty area; or by providing the highest level technical support to right of way professionals by completing sensitive assignments and auditing project files.
BRIDGE
BRIDGE DESIGN DRAFTER:
- drafts plans and calculates dimensions, elevations and quantities for bridges and structures;
- drafts and details drawings for structural plans using design notes, sketches and rough drafts;
- computes concrete and steel quantities from finished plans and prepares final costs estimates.
UTILITIES
TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT UTILITIES SPECIALIST:
- computes approximate costs of projected relocations;
- estimates cost allocation between the agency and utility companies;
