REHABILITATIVE LEAD ENGINEER 53202
7/16/88 A
CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the advanced level of two classes in a series of classes which represents positions that are responsible for the design, manufacture or modification of adaptive equipment for maximizing functioning of physically disabled people. Positions in this class are responsible for management of a rehabilitative engineering program at a specific facility. Responsibilities include managing rehabilitative engineering services; directing related educational program; conducting or overseeing evaluations of clients with particularly difficult physical limitations to determine adaptive equipment options; overseeing the development and fabrication of adaptive equipment for clients; and coordinating a system of dissemination of information and designs developed. This class is distinguished from the Rehabilitative Engineer in that it supervises a Rehabilitative Engineer and manages a rehabilitative engineering program.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in systematizing the design of adaptive equipment for persons with disabilities. Supervises Rehabilitative Engineers and participates in the design, fabrication and modification of adaptive equipment. Organizes and manages clinical rehabilitative engineering services through statewide clinics and consultation with rehabilitation and medical professionals. Consults with clients in order to analyze more complex problems and to utilize scientific and mathematical problem solving techniques to design and prescribe solutions to identified problems.
Supervision Given: Supervises Rehabilitative Engineers and other personnel involved in performing work related to the design of adaptive equipment.
Supervision Received: Performs work under the general direction of a manager responsible for rehabilitation programs.
Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for management of the design of equipment and adaptive aids to maximize employability, physical independence and quality of life of persons with disabilities.
Impact of Actions: Actions related to the design and implementation of adaptive devices will have a moderate impact on the cost and quality of services delivered, which are essential to the employability, physical independence, safety, communication ability, cognitive development, and quality of life for disabled persons.
Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts are held with rehabilitation personnel, medical staff and patients to discuss needs and services available, gather information and present information or services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of engineering principles and techniques as applied to the design of adaptive aids and rehabilitative equipment and managerial techniques to effectively utilize and direct staff. Considerable knowledge of biomedicine principles. Considerable knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Skills: Working skill in fabrication of adaptive aids and equipment.
Abilities: Demonstrated ability to conceptualize the design and fabrication of adaptive equipment for individuals with a wide range of physical, and motor disabilities; prepare specifications and technical drawings; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and direct and supervise the work of others.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certification: None.
Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with major course work in an engineering discipline, preferably rehabilitation engineering.
Level and Tone of Experience: Considerable experience in rehabilitation engineering, including leading the work of others and experience related to the position’s duties.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
CLASS HISTORY
This class specification was revised in July 1988, as part of the Classification Review/Specification Update Project. This replaces the class specification for Rehabilitation Engineer Supervisor.
