MARINE SCIENTIST 53111

B

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class is the first level in the Marine Scientist series. Positions in this class assist higher level scientists in a marine science program. Duties include collecting field data; preparing laboratory samples; maintaining accurate laboratory records; analyzing data; and writing reports. This class is distinguished from the Marine Scientist Senior by the latter's responsibility for organizing and coordinating research projects.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty requiring the independent collection, preparation, and analysis of data related to the quality of water and marine life. The work typically involves assisting higher level scientists with research projects by conducting field operations; providing interpretation of analysis; and writing segments of reports. May provide advice on marine-related matters to federal, state, and local government officials, industry, and private individuals.

Supervision Given: Positions do not typically supervise but may supervise laboratory and support personnel.

Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a higher level scientist.

Scope: Positions in this class support marine scientific research programs by performing research and providing data for reports.

Impact of Actions: Work has a moderate impact on public safety and protection of marine resources. Accurate information, provided through field and laboratory research of marine life with the regard to toxins and chemicals, identifies possible hazardous health situations for humans and marine life.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with the general public and government agencies to provide information and advice on toxins and contaminants and their effect on marine life.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of marine science, scientific research procedures and of computerized data analysis.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to perform field sampling and laboratory techniques; to analyze scientific data; to supervise laboratory support personnel; and to write laboratory reports accurately describing research findings.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in marine science or a scientific field such as chemistry, biology, earth science, mathematics, or physics.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in marine research or a related field.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
