CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class and supervisory level in the Architect Series for classes that are responsible for the development, design, construction, alteration or repair of state real property. Positions assigned to this class are responsible for reviewing and analyzing plans and specifications for completeness and conformity to architectural codes. The class is distinguished from the Architect class by the responsibility for complete design projects and more complex architectural assignments and supervision of other architects. Architect Seniors lack the authority for final review and approval of plans and design concepts that are demonstrated by the class Architect Consultant.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Work activities include reviewing and analyzing work assignments in order to determine design, economic and aesthetic requirements for the projects to be undertaken by self or subordinate staff; researching and developing design standards for conformance to agency, state and federal codes and regulations; and providing technical advice and guidance to subordinates and other agency personnel. Positions assigned to this class are responsible for establishing time frames and financial constraints for projects assigned to subordinate staff. May be responsible for administering construction contracts to include monitoring construction activities, and making on-site inspections in order to assess progress and resolve conflicts.

Supervision Given: General supervision is provided to Architects, technicians or drafters. Architect Seniors are responsible for providing technical review and approval of work products of subordinates.

Supervision Received: Direction is received from Architect Consultants or other Architect Managers who have final review and approval of work products.

Scope: Work activities affect the agency’s ability to meet its capital outlay objectives and financial requirements, and completion of projects by those supervised in a timely, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing manner.

Impact of Actions: Work involves dealing with a variety of technical architectural problems and their resolution. Poor work designs could result in additional costs to the agency in the construction and/or modification of structures.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with organizational units within the assigned agency and with other state agencies to discuss design project and status; and a variety of vendors, consultants, contractors and local governing officials in order to coordinate and complete work activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of architectural principles and practices; construction processes; construction design and specifications; building codes; and the materials and methods of construction.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others; develop work schedules; plan and prioritize own and others work; communicate orally and in writing with a variety of people; detect problems in architectural designs and offer solutions; and resolve immediate construction and design problems and conflicts with a variety of internal and external staff.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in architecture or related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience as a architect to include reviewing and directing the work of others.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

Class re-titled and redefined in October 1988 as a result of the statewide Classification Review/Specification Update Program. It replaces the Architect B class.
