CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Architect Series for classes that are responsible for the research, development, design, construction, alteration or repair of state real property. Positions assigned to this class prepare drawings, schematics and specifications of simple to moderately complex renovation or construction work; coordinate with consultants and other staff members from inception to completion of the assigned project; and participate in field inspections and reviews. This class is distinguished from the Architect Senior class by the lack of supervisory authority and by the less complex assignments.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires the application of architectural principles in the preparation and review of designs for construction and renovation of facilities. Prepares preplanning studies, preliminary investigative reports and, as necessary, contracts for architectural services. During development phases and construction reviews the design and documents for appropriateness of solution to programmatic, aesthetic and functional criteria, and for compliance with building codes, fire and safety regulations, and agency/university guidelines. Conducts field inspections of projects under construction to insure compliance with plans and specifications.

Supervision Given: Supervision of others is not a factor for this class.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the general supervision of Architect Senior, Architect Consultant or other architects. All drawings and schematics are reviewed before they are included as a formal part of a project.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with independent contractors and consultants by telephone, written correspondence or in meetings to discuss design and status. Meets periodically with other staff involved in specific projects for information clarification and update. Occasionally talks to staff at Department of General Services, Division of Engineering and Buildings for informational purposes.
