Distinguishing Features of the Work

Directs a public health engineering division in the State Health Department.

Plans and directs engineering and other aspects of statewide programs relating to water supply, sewage/wastewater, and shellfish sanitation, or to solid and hazardous waste management in the Commonwealth. Develops programs and plans to fulfill statutory responsibilities. Provides supervision to bureau directors. Studies pending and approved State and Federal legislation. Maintains liaison with Federal and other authorities. Represents the Agency at meetings, on boards, or before General Assembly Committees. Advises the Commissioner Assistant Commissioner, Board of Health and other elected or appointed officials in matters relating to the Division's area of responsibility.

Reports to an Assistant Health Commissioner.

 

Qualification Guide

Thorough knowledge of the objectives, principles and practices of public health, environmental or sanitary engineering. Ability to organize and direct engineering programs. Effective human relations, and written and oral communications skills. Experience in a governmental regulatory program dealing with sanitary or environmental engineering. Licensure as a professional engineer in Virginia.
