MECHANICAL ENGINEER SENIOR 52056

10/16/88 B

CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the second class in a series of classes with positions that are responsible for the development, construction and monitoring of the various mechanical systems used throughout state facilities. Positions in this class are typically involved in the design and development of plans and specifications for mechanical systems being installed or modified in agency construction projects. Incumbents monitor mechanical systems and review plans and specifications for capital outlay projects and may be responsible for preparing mechanical engineer contract specifications and monitoring construction projects. This class is distinguished from the Mechanical Engineer class in that this class is responsible for directing projects from inception to closing, which typically includes the review of others' work. This class is distinguished from the Mechanical Engineer consultant class in that Mechanical Engineer Seniors are not responsible for the design and direct installation of plant systems statewide or for an entire physical plant's operation.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty, coordinating construction/renovation involving mechanical systems utilized by state agencies or complex physical plants. Develops specifications, drawings, and/or cost estimates to construct/renovate/install mechanical systems. Reviews drawings and specifications prepared by other personnel for the construction/renovation/ installation of building components and systems. Monitors construction projects to ensure contract compliance. Prepares reports on efficiency/effectiveness of mechanical systems; provides technical assistance to engineers and architects; monitors mechanical systems and arranges for repairs and suggests improvements.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the direction of a higher level engineer or manager who provides project priorities.

Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for the operation, maintenance, design and construction/renovation of mechanical systems.

Impact of Actions: Actions will affect the efficiency of mechanical systems and affect an agency s operating costs.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with consulting engineers, architects and contractors to discuss progress and problems and to review design requirements. Frequent contact with contractors to discuss construction or renovation progress or problems. Occasional contact with manufacturer or marketing representative to discuss projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering.

Skills: Considerable skills in drafting and preparing contract drawings.
