CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in a series of classes with positions responsible for the development and design, construction and monitoring of the various mechanica1 systems used throughout state facilities. Positions in this class perform work involving mechanical engineering design and review services. Responsibilities typically include performing mechanical design services for the development of plans and specifications for a variety of mechanical systems, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing systems, and/or special equipment. This class is distinguished from the Mechanical Engineer Senior class in that the assigned duties are restricted to the design of systems and collection and preparation of mechanical engineering data.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in performing mechanical engineering design and review services for renovation and capital outlay projects. Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate malfunction of a system function. Provides mechanical design services for the development of plans and specifications for building renovation and construction involving heating, ventilation, air conditioning, exhaust systems, plumbing systems, fire suppression systems, laboratory and/or research equipment and preliminary cost estimates. Selects mechanical equipment; maintains a reference file of equipment information. Prepares final plans and specifications for approval and advertising for bids for calculating sizes, capacities, quantities and costs.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the general supervision of higher level Mechanical Engineers, engineers or architects.

Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for basic designs for mechanical systems that will have an effect on the other phases of the projects and functioning of the system.

Impact of Actions: Actions will affect the quality of work completed during a project dime at optimum utilization of machines and systems and cost effectiveness.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with employees gathering data relevant to projects and with equipment vendors regarding mechanical equipment. Occasional contact with architecture/engineering firms for discussion/review of the design of capital outlay projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of standard mechanical systems design theories an practices.

Skills: Working skills in drafting and preparing contract drawings.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to apply standard mechanical system design theory; make engineering computations and layout projects; compile, organize and analyze a variety of data in preparing mechanical engineer design systems; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in utilizing principles and methods of engineering design and analysis.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
