CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the first class in the Electrical Engineer Series for positions that are responsible for conducting activities concerned with the design and insta1lation of electrical equipment and/or systems. Positions assigned to this class are responsible for independently designing or reviewing and approving plans and specifications for electrical installations, modifications or renovations. This class is distinguished from the Electrical Engineer Senior by its responsibility for less complex and more well defined projects.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty which requires the application of electrical engineering theory and principles in the design and review of electrical plans and specifications and in the installation, renovation, and maintenance of moderately complex electrical systems and devices. Work activities include reviewing electrical plans for new buildings and renovation work to ensure conformance with applicable codes and regulations; maintaining documentation of power distribution systems, equipment specifications, diagrams and layouts; and working with contract consultants by providing input and reviewing and approving contracted electrical services. Positions in this class may provide mechanical design services such as plan and specification development and may on occasion provide maintenance to electrical systems or equipment utilized by the assigned agency. Provides supervisor with maintenance, installation time and material records in order to document work and repair adjustments made to inventory and equipment by completing work and repair orders.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor. Incumbents may lead work of limited number of electrical technicians or workers.

Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of an Electrical Engineer Senior or other agency professional or manager.

Scope: Positions in this class are responsible for well-defined projects that contribute to the effectiveness of the overall functioning of electrical systems.

Impact of Actions: Quality and timeliness of work performed is essential to the day-to-day operations of an agency. Well planned, successful completion of work ensures efficient and safe electrical systems.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contact is made with individuals in organizational units or departments to discuss problems or malfunctions in equipment or specifics on the electrical systems in order to determine specific needs and make necessary repairs or designs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electrical engineering theory, principles, practices and procedures; and of electrical codes, regulations, and installation procedures.

Skills: Skill in repair and maintenance of electrical circuitry.

Ability: Demonstrated ability to prepare, read, interpret and design electrical plans and specifications; and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; to interpret electrical writing diagrams.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.
