CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION
This is the trainee level class for positions entering either the field management, or engineering series. Positions in this class, through an experiential training program, gain familiarity with the engineering methods and agency practices and programs related to either the field management, or engineering disciplines.
DISTINGUISHINIG FEATURES OF THE WORK
Complexity of Work: Performs progressively responsible work in a variety of agency settings in preparation for advanced highway engineering work or for a field managerial position. Performs tasks that are planned to provide experience and familiarization with methods and practices in the specialty field and to ascertain the interest and aptitudes of the beginning engineer.
Supervision Given: Supervision of others is typically not a factor. As training progresses, may be assigned supervisory responsibilities.
Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a variety of engineers or higher level field managers.
Scope: Positions in this class perform routine work assignments in a wide variety of organizational settings. Work activities have little impact beyond immediate unit.
Impact of Actions: Negative consequences are limited due to the close supervision received. As training progresses, will assume greater responsibility. Greater efficiency and effectiveness may be obtained through exchange of new technology and innovative approaches to problems.
Personal Contacts: Some contact on routine matters with individuals both inside and outside the organization.

Knowledge: Some knowledge of standard engineering principles and practices as related to their assigned area.

Abilities: None required for entrance into this class.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*
Licenses or Certification: None.
Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with a degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, transportation or urban planning, or a related area.
Level and Type of Experience: Relevant agency experience as assessed by the hiring authority.
An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
CLASS HISTORY
This class was re-established as a result of the 1987 Engineering study. Positions in this class were previously assigned to the Highway Engineer A classification.
