Distinguishing Features of the Work

Coordinates services and community resources to meet the educational, vocational, recreational and social needs of blind/visually impaired youngsters aged birth through twenty-one years.

Position reports to a Visually Handicapped Regional Manager.

Acts as a liaison between the Department for the Visually Handicapped and local schools to ensure that adequate and appropriate education services are provided to blind and visually impaired children. Is responsible for the compilation and dissemination of information necessary for the delivery of educational services to blind and visually impaired children. Serves as a resource person to regular and special education teachers in identifying instructional needs and developing appropriate intervention techniques to meet these needs. Provides technical assistance to school administrators in the evaluation and coordination of vision program needs in order to improve existing services and to identify future needs. Is responsible for providing technical assistance to program development, and for monitoring of the vision programs and Itinerant Vision Teachers in Virginia.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing the education of handicapped children, especially the blind and visually impaired. Knowledge of the related educational processes. Skill in interpreting vision information and relating it to educational goals. Ability to provide counseling to teachers and parents including recommendations on programs and available materials.

Experience in teaching handicapped children is required. Prefer persons meeting collegiate professional certification requirements for teaching the visually impaired, and/or meeting the American Association of Workers with the Blind/American Educators for the Visually Handicapped requirements for orientation and mobility.
