Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises a staff of Disability Determination Specialists or Quality Assurance Specialists and Vocational Specialist who are engaged in the development, evaluation or processing of claims for disability benefits under the provisions of the Social Security Act.

The duties involve managing the work of the assigned unit in such a mariner as to maintain agency quality and quantity goals in the adjudication and evaluation of disability claims. Assignments are made to Disability Determination or Quality Assurance Specialists on the basis of the nature and difficulty of the several types of claims and in consideration of the level of training and skill of the employee. Attention is given to planning and managing unit caseloads so that backlogs are prevented without the sacrificing of a high standard of work performance. New and revised policy and procedure statements are explained to subordinates, and encouragement is given in the study and review of manuals and other guideline material. Responsibility is included for reporting statistical data required in compiling division records, for evaluating and advising of the need for additional staff or other changes, and for assisting with special projects. General direction is received from the Disability Determination Regional Director.

 

Qualification Guide

Considerable knowledge of the statutes, rules and regulations applicable to the Disability Determination Program. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Ability to interpret and implement broad procedures and regulations. Ability to objectively evaluate performance and to determine staff training requirements. Ability to establish relationships and work closely with people in widely varied social and economic environments.
