Distinguishing Features of the Work

Supervises professional rehabilitation and clerical employees in a service unit of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The duties involve planning and supervising the operation of a rehabilitation unit in a mental or correctional institution, public school, hospital, rehabilitation center or other field service unit. Units vary in nature, size, and in the make-up of professional personnel depending upon the location and objectives of the activity. Responsibility is involved for orienting new employees to the work, employing and training clerical assistants, and supervising employees from other agencies who are assigned to the unit. Responsibility is attached for coordinating the rehabilitation services with the programs of the saliency or institution at which the services are provided. In a relatively large unit (e.g., 25 or more employees) or in a unit where services are varied and complex, immediate supervision is normally available from a higher-level supervisor. The planning and scheduling of unit activities and supervision, training, and review of the work are performed with a considerable degree of independence. A higher-level supervisor is consulted for periodic reviews of unit effectiveness and to plan any changes or additions in the overall service program.
