CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class designs and directs a comprehensive clinical social work program encompassing the provision of professional social services to patients and clients receiving treatment. Positions in this class direct a clinical social work program and referral support system in a hospital or facility involving the application of the principles, practices, and techniques of social work in diagnosis and treatment, planning, and implementation of support systems to the patient/client population. This class is distinguished from the Clinical Social Work Supervisor class by its responsibility for the clinical and administrative management of social work services, budget coordination, and policy development and implementation.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of unusual difficulty in the planning, development, and implementation of clinical social services to assist patients and clients during hospital stay and in transition from the hospital or facility to private care. Directs the development and delivery of social work services to the patient/client population to ensure the provision of quality services and coordination of community resources. Monitors plans for the delivery of services; designs and directs the implementation and coordination of services: and oversees referrals to community agencies for transportation, meals, foster and residential care, counseling, rehabilitation, child and adolescent placement, and/or other services. Reviews and monitors patient records to ensure that matching services are provided and are appropriate; maintains liaison with community resources and facilities; and evaluates service plans. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary management team. Monitors the supervision of graduate student practical training in social work.

Supervision Given: Positions in this class provide clinical supervision, or administrative and clinical supervision to Clinical Social Work Supervisors, Clinical Social Workers, Social Workers, and support personnel in the organization and delivery of social services and maintenance of case records.

Supervision Received: Performs work under the administrative direction of a hospital or facility administrator, receiving minimum guidance on the overall clinical and administrative management of the social work program.

Scope: Designs and develops a social work program that meets diverse patient/client needs and correlates with available resources.

Impact of Actions: The effective correlation of patient/client needs with services provided has a substantial long-term affect on patient/client programs and overall program success.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contact with state and local authorities to coordinate state and community services and resources.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of social work and management of services in a clinical setting. Considerable knowledge of planning and implementing patient/client resource services; policies and procedures related to work; and therapeutic assessment counseling and treatment.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to train and direct employees in casework management; operate and maintain an effective social work service and referral support system; develop and interpret agency policies and regulations; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in social work or a related discipline.

Level and Type of Experience: Management of various social work services; casework development and management; and therapeutic assessment, counseling and treatment.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.
