CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the supervisory level and second class in the Clinical Social Work Series. Positions in this class supervise and implement social work services in a hospital or facility. Positions in this class function as the supervisor of clinical social work services in a clinic unit, or program in a facility. This class is distinguished from the Clinical Social Worker class by its responsibility for management of social work services in a clinic, unit, or program, and direct involvement in the design of therapeutic services to clients requiring a full range of social service assistance. Positions in this class typically supervise subordinate social workers and program support staff. This class is distinguished from the Clinical Social Work Director class by the latter having responsibility for the clinical and administrative management of social work services, budget coordination, and policy development and implementation.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in the supervision and implementation of clinical social services to a client population. Provides and manages the implementation and quality review of social service program; reviews and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and practices pertaining to the social work program; and serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing professional guidance on complex client problems. Positions in this class conduct psycho-social evaluations and treatment assessments; plan, implement, and document therapeutic treatment plans; discharge plans; and counsel clients and families in order to assist them in their adjustment to emotional, physical, mental and financial hardships. Serves as liaison to social service providers and other community resources to establish effective linkages for programmatic or placement purposes.

Supervision Given: Positions in this class typically supervise Clinical Social Workers, Social Workers, and/or social work program support staff in the delivery of services related to the treatment and discharge of clients served.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a C1inical Social Work Director, program or medical administrator on program design, delivery and overall services provided to the client population.

Scope: Provides client services that encompass assessments by an interdisciplinary team, individual and family psycho-social counseling, the utilization of community resources, and development of discharge plans.

Impact of Actions: The effective correlation of patient/client needs with services provided determines program success and the ability of the hospital or facility to provide quality services to patients/clients during hospiti1 stay or in transition.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts to exchange information on the coordination of client services, admission and discharge plans, referrals, and therapeutic intervention and approaches.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, services and techniques of social work; therapeutic assessment and counseling; treatment program management; and interviewing and intervention techniques. Working knowledge of available community services.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to assess client needs; supervise the work of others; conduct psycho-social assessments; provide social services and assistance to clients; coordinate community and agency resources; and communicate orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with advanced course work in social work or a related discipline.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in varied social work services and casework development; psycho-social evaluations; therapeutic assessment; and counseling of individuals.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class specification replaces the Clinical Social Worker C specification. The revision is the result of a study of the Clinical Social Worker Series in the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
