CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

 

This is the first class in the Clinical Social Worker Series. Positions in this class perform social work services in a hospital or facility. Positions typically provide a full range of social work services in a unit or serve as lead workers in specialized service areas. This class is distinguished from the Social Worker class by its responsibility for independently providing specialized services involving therapeutic counseling and assessment or work services in a unit, clinic, or special service area. This class is distinguished from the clinical Social Work Supervisor class by the latter having the responsibility for management of social work services, to involve the supervision of others.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in the delivery of clinical services to clients which may include in-depth social work analyses and assessment, therapeutic treatment planning and implementation, admissions and discharge planning, case management, family planning, therapeutic counseling, and community resource and referral services to identify the needs of assigned patients/clients. Assesses clients' status by serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team to assist in the development of treatment plans and through individual and family psycho-social counseling. Manages individual casework activities; develops comprehensive social work plans; documents treatment and discharge plans; and provides supportive counseling to clients. Determines available community resources to assist in client treatment and recovery.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor; however, may lead Social Workers, support personnel, and students in the coordination of services to the client population.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a Clinical Social Work Supervisor in the delivery of services to clients.

Scope: Performs a range of clinical social work services in a specialized social service program area involving treatment, discharge planning and supportive counseling to the patient population.

Impact of Actions: The assessment of client needs and resulting therapeutic or casework services provided significantly affect the wel1-being of clients, and may impact upon the cost of services.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal and external contacts with clients and families for psycho-social counseling and service providers to obtain and exchange information regarding the needs of the clients.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of social work principles, services, techniques and practices; social assessment methodology; case management; therapeutic counseling and assessments; and interviewing and intervention techniques. Working knowledge of available social, economic, and community resources.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to provide social services and assistance to clients; coordinate community and agency resources; communicate orally and in writing; and work effectively with people in the resolution of problems.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from a college or university with advanced course work in socia1 work or a related discipline.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in clinical social services, admissions and discharge planning, therapeutic counseling and assessment, and coordination of community resources.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

This class specification replaces the Clinical Social Worker B specification. The revision and class title change are the result of a study of the Clinical Social Worker Series in the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
