CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the single class in the socia1 work series for positions that perform social casework activity in human services agencies, health clinics, hospitals and faci1ities. Positions in this class typically are assigned to admissions and discharge planning, casework services, family planning, crisis intervention, community service resource and coordination, and support counseling. This class is distinguished from the Clinical Social Worker class by the requirement of the Clinical Social Worker to work on specialized services involving therapeutic counseling and assessment.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of moderate difficulty in the assessment and referral of clients. Prepares social case histories; serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team; selects available community resources for referral; and follows up on assigned client population. Assists in the placement and referral of clients to various local facilities that provide optimum care and assistance in treatment. Provides supportive counseling and assistance to clients in an emergency or crisis situation, and assists higher-level social work supervisors in the management of casework activities.

Supervision Given: Supervision is typically not a factor.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from a higher level Clinical Social Work Supervisor or administrator in the performance of casework studies and referral.

Scope: Positions in this class perform case studies and make referrals to community resource agencies, follow up on patient/client activity, and prepare progress reports.

Impact of Actions: Work has minor impact on the successful delivery of community resources provided by local agencies. The failure to appropriately provide services prescribed in client's discharge plan may significantly impact successful treatment.

Personal Contacts: Frequent contacts with clients, families, and representatives of public and private agencies to obtain and exchange information and build support systems.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of social work; available community resources; and interviewing.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to apply the principles, practices, and techniques of social work; make referrals fol1owing assessments; determine and select services; communicate effectively with clients, families, and groups; and communicate effectively in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from a co11ege or university with major course work in social work or a related discipline.

Level and Type of Experience: Experience in social casework services, admission and discharge planning, and referring clients to community resources.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class specification replaces the Social Worker A and Social Worker B class specifications. The revision, combining of the two classes and class title changes, are the result of a study of the Social Worker series in the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
