CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This is the supervisory level class in the Psychology series. This class provides supervision to Psychologists and Psychologist Seniors providing psychological services in an institutional environment. The work includes the hands-on delivery of treatment services as well as supervisory responsibility. This class may serve as the charge psychologist in an institution or facility, serving a smaller, specialized population. This class is distinguished from the Psychologist Senior class by the additional responsibility to provide formal supervision to other psychologists. It is distinguished from the Psychology Director class by the latter's responsibility to direct the full realm of psychological services to a large and diverse patient population.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty in directing, integrating, and coordinating psychological services and related functions of the unit(s); develops and monitors quality assurance programs; advises counselors, social workers, medical staff, security staff, instructors and administrators on the care and treatment of clients; provides individual, group and/or family psychotherapy; and supervises and provides diagnoses and treatments of emotional and mental disorders. Employs testing to formulate treatment plans, provide documentation for legal or financial issues, or for other types of treatment. Serves as a member of interdisciplinary team, recommending methods of treatment, discharges and/or transfers, additional services, documenting progresses, and treatment interventions. Performs performance evaluations on staff supervised. May provide crisis intervention; conduct forensic evaluations; appear in court as expert witness; and/or train direct care staff in various methods of behavioral management. Positions in this class may perform civil commitments of individuals requiring hospitalization for mental illness; order suicidal or homicidal observations of clients; and/or sit on commissions to examine and evaluate client status. May conduct independent neuropsychological assessments and forensic evaluations; and/or authorize client transfers, passes, and temporary visits.

Supervision Given: Supervises professional Psychologist Assistants, Psychologists, Psychologist Seniors, and mental health workers.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a facility director, program director, or Psychology Director.

Scope: Work affects the services provided to clients, the training and development of subordinate staff and the success of the unit(s).

Impact: Effective decisions facilitate successful delivery of services and appropriate treatment of client population. Ineffective decisions may be costly in terms of time, money, services and client and employee goodwill.

Personal Contacts Frequent contacts with personnel in private and public facilities, colleges and universities, court systems, governmental social service programs, and community service boards; relatives, facility security and administrative personnel, medical personnel, and other service providers in order to coordinate and supervise psychological services for a program or facility.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Working knowledge of psychological assessment and treatment modalities, including psychotherapy; principles and practices of supervision; and program design and evaluation.

Skills: None identified for this class.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to supervise; serve as member of interdisciplinary team; implement treatment; develop and implement facility psychological programs; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: Licensed as a clinical psychologist or psychologist, clinical may be required in accordance with the Attorney General's interpretation of Section 54.1-3601.4 and/or 19.2-169.5 of the Code of Virginia. A license may also be required for accordance with Section 19.2-169.5 of the Code of Virginia.

Education or Training: Graduation form an accredited college or university with advanced course work in psychology, such as would be received in a psychology Ph.D. program.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible experience as a Psychologist and/or Psychologist Senior which provides an understanding of psychological services, and experience, and/or supervised training in clinical psychology or clinical services.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class was established in June 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/ Specification Update Program. This class, along with the Psychologist Senior class replaces the Psychologist C Ph.D. class.
