Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs a variety of technical, laboratory and animal care duties in a general hospital or animal research facility.

May assist in the training and supervision of lower lever technicians and other workers. Receives supervision from a higher level technician or other superior.

Duties performed range from maintaining proper animal hygiene (feeding, watering, and cleaning housing facilities) and disposing of dead bodies, to progressively more responsible tasks such as administering anesthesia, giving numerous injections and drugs, taking blood samples, and pre-operative care and observation of animals. Maintains records of tests performed. Requisitions and maintains inventory of food and supplies.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of animal care and hygiene. Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures. Ability to work with animals. Ability to train and supervise the work of others.

Graduation from high school, and laboratory and animal care experience. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is preferred. Training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for high school graduation.
