Distinguishing Features of the Work

Performs a variety of animal care and related laboratory duties in a general hospital or animal research facility.

Supervision is received from senior technicians who make general duty assignments and periodically check the work.

Duties performed at this level include feeding and watering animals, and cleaning housing facilities; labeling dead animals for autopsy and storage; preparing identification cards for new animals; and assisting in the disposal of dead animals. Handles animals during the administration of anesthesia and other research procedures. May keep such records as supply inventory, and animal use and response data.

 

Qualification Guide

Knowledge of the basic principles of animal care and hygiene. Ability to work with animals. Ability to interpret and follow instructions and to execute assigned duties independently. Ability to communicate with coworkers.

Qualification for certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science is preferred.
