Distinguishing Features of the Work

Administers routine physical or occupational therapy treatments under the direct supervision of a licensed physical or occupational therapist or a licensed physical therapist assistant; and performs related duties such as preparing patients for treatment, observing patients during treatment, maintaining supplies, and cleaning and sterilizing equipment.

Close supervision is received from a physical or occupational therapist or physical therapist assistant in the form of specific instructions for and on-site supervision of each treatment administered.

Prepares patients for physical or occupational therapy treatments. Administers treatments such as hot and cold packs, paraffin baths, infrared lamp, whirlpool, Hubbard Tank and simple exercise routines. Assists patients in learning to ambulate through the use of tilt tables, walkers, braces, or parallel bars. Supervises patients in practicing the activities of daily living such as transfers, feeding, dressing, and grooming. Assists therapists in the fabrication of adaptive equipment; supervises patients in the use of such equipment; applies splints. Observes patient reactions during treatment and reports to supervisor. Fills and empties hydrotherapy equipment. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment. Keeps treatment area stocked with supplies.

 

Qualification Guide

Manual dexterity; ability to follow explicit treatment directions; ability to work effectively with patients of various ages, mental competence and physical disabilities; ability to report patient progress through oral communication.

Experience working with patients in a hospital or clinic setting preferred.
