CLASS CONCEPT/FUNCTION

This class is the third class and managerial level in the Sterile Supply Management series. Positions in this class manage the central sterile supply department of a hospital with responsibility for planning, organizing and managing a centralized hospital program for the inventory, maintenance, and delivery of sterile and non-sterile medical supplies to units within a hospital. This class is distinguished from the Sterile Supply Supervisor Senior class by its responsibility for managing the whole sterile supply department.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

Complexity of Work: Performs work of considerable difficulty. Plans, organizes, manages and controls all work activities of sterile supply (sterilization and distribution) for a hospital. Develops and interprets policies and procedures in compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards relative to sterilization, infection and inventory control. Manages, maintains and implements inventory controls to ensure the sufficient, cost effective and timely inventory of clinical supplies and their distribution. Functions as the primary hospital contact for decisions regarding sterilization of supplies and their distribution. Ensures accuracy of processes of quality control inspections. Enforces policy and procedures relative to infection control to protect the health of subordinates and patients. Determines corrective actions to be taken to correct supply/equipment deficits, distribution, rotation of supplies, infection control or contaminated supplies and their sterilization. Develops formal budget plans of costs and revenue projections; interprets variances; and identifies and initiates corrective actions. Reviews and updates the hospital item costs for sterile and non-sterile services.

Supervision Given: Supervises Sterile Supply Supervisors and Supervisor Seniors

to ensure that all work is performed in compliance with state, agency and department personnel, administrative and medical policy and procedures.

Supervision Received: Receives general direction from a Hospital Materials Manager or other higher level administrative position.

Scope: Decisions affect infection control, budgetary and patient cost containment connected with the sterile supply operation, and the provision of sterile and non-sterile medical supplies of a hospital.

Impact of Actions: Development of sound policies and procedures, effective supervision of staff and efficient operation of the sterile supply department ensure that hospital units are adequately supplied and that resources are used efficiently. Ineffective job performance can have serious negative impacts in terms of costs in time, money, hospital accreditation and patient well-being.

Personal Contacts: Frequent internal contacts with medical staff; and hospital administrators involving the provision of information about services and supply needs and problems. Occasional contacts are made with equipment vendors regarding purchases and repair of equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of sterile processing techniques, infection and inventory control, and distribution in a health care setting; of business management, finance, procurement and personnel principles; of administrative policies and regulations; and of applicable federal, state and agency policies.

Abilities: Demonstrated ability to plan, review and evaluate administrative operations and resources; to analyze and interpret needs; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and to supervise others.

 

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE*

Licenses or Certification: None.

Education or Training: Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in business, hospital/health care administration or a related field; and with additional training in sterile processing techniques and infection inventory control.

Level and Type of Experience: Progressively responsible administrative experience in materials management including supervision of staff and responsibility for planning and evaluating administrative programs.

An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

 

CLASS HISTORY

This class replaces MCVH Central Sterile Supply Manager class. It was developed in April 1989 as a result of the Classification Review/Specification Update Program.
